🧭 Pre-reading: understand the language first
Before you answer DMV questions, prepare the vocabulary and the question patterns. You do not need to memorize every word. The goal is to recognize the words that carry the main meaning.
Como usar esta parte: primeiro leia a palavra em inglês. Tente lembrar ou imaginar o significado. Depois clique para conferir a explicação simples, a tradução e um exemplo. Não precisa copiar tudo — anote apenas o que for novo ou confuso para você.

🧩 E. Constructions to recognize before the test
IF + situation, what SHOULD you do? If one of your tires blows out while you are driving, you should…
Primeiro identifique a situação: tire blows out. Depois procure a ação correta.
WHEN MAY + action? When may you cross a single broken white line?
A pergunta quer saber em qual condição a ação é permitida.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF + noun? What is the purpose of a merging lane?
A pergunta quer a função/finalidade, não uma ação aleatória.
BEFORE + action, you SHOULD… Before changing lanes, you should…
Procure o que precisa acontecer antes da ação principal.
WHILE + -ing Steer straight while gradually slowing down.
WHILE conecta duas ações acontecendo ao mesmo tempo.
DO NOT + action + UNTIL + condition Do not brake until you have control of the vehicle.
UNTIL mostra a condição que precisa ser atingida antes da próxima ação.
📝 F. One worked example before you start
While driving on a highway, you realize that you have missed your exit. What should you do?
1
Find the situation: you missed your exit.
2
Find the task:What should you do? = choose the correct/safe action.
3
Read every option. Do not choose only because you recognize one word.
4
Eliminate options that do not fit the situation. Backing up, stopping in a travel lane, or making an unsafe U-turn do not match the safe response.
5
Choose the option that answers the exact question: continue to the next exit.
Se aparecer uma palavra que você não conhece: não pare imediatamente para traduzir a frase inteira. Primeiro identifique: qual é a situação? + o que a pergunta quer? + quais opções claramente não combinam? Muitas vezes você consegue chegar à resposta mesmo com 1 ou 2 palavras desconhecidas.
1 · From your practice app
📱 Read the question exactly as it appears
Start with the same style you are already seeing in your app.
How to read: ① Find the situation. ② Find the task word: should / purpose / proper way. ③ Read all options. ④ Eliminate answers that do not answer the exact question.

2 · Small words, big difference
🔎 Understand the test language
Before learning more traffic vocabulary, make these question words automatic.
Focus only on the small word in CAPITALS. You are training the language of the test here, not the traffic rule. Ask yourself: “Is this question asking for an action, permission, obligation, condition, or exception?”
In the question “What SHOULD you do if a tire blows out?”, what does SHOULD signal?
In “When MAY you cross the line?”, what does MAY signal?
In “You MUST yield to traffic,” what does MUST signal?
In “All of the following are correct EXCEPT…”, what are you looking for?
In “Do not proceed UNLESS it is safe,” what does UNLESS do?
In “Back up slowly WHILE looking behind you,” what does WHILE show?
3 · Decode before answering
🧠 What is the question asking?
Do not solve the driving rule yet. First prove that you understand the English task.
Important: before thinking about the correct traffic rule, complete this sentence in your head: “This question wants me to identify…” If you cannot finish that sentence, read the question again.
When may you cross a single broken white line?
What should you do if a tire blows out while you are driving?
Which statement about a flashing red light is correct?
Before turning on a green arrow, who must you yield to?
What does a double solid white line mean?
Why should you avoid stopping in an acceleration lane when entering a limited access highway?
4 · Read and locate the answer
📖 Florida Handbook Reading Lab
The answer is inside each short passage. Find the condition, rule, or exception before you click.
Read in two passes: first for the general idea; second to locate the exact sentence that supports your answer. Look especially for when, if, still, unless, before, while.
White lane lines separate traffic moving in the same direction. A single broken white line may be crossed to change lanes when it is safe. Crossing double solid white lines or changing lanes across them is not allowed.
Which line may a driver cross to change lanes when it is safe?
A flashing red light is treated like a stop sign. Stop, then proceed when it is safe. A flashing yellow light warns the driver to proceed with caution.
What must a driver do at a flashing red light?
A green arrow allows a driver to turn in the direction of the arrow. The driver must still yield to vehicles and pedestrians already in the intersection.
What is still required before completing the turn?
When entering a limited access highway, begin checking for an opening on the entrance ramp. Signal, increase your speed in the acceleration lane, adjust your speed, and merge when you can do so safely. Yield to traffic already on the highway.
What is the purpose of increasing speed in the acceleration lane?
Do not stop in the acceleration lane unless traffic is too heavy and there is no space to enter safely.
When may stopping in the acceleration lane be necessary?
Never back up on an entrance ramp or exit ramp. The handbook gives a special exception only for a driver who sees a WRONG WAY or DO NOT ENTER sign or red reflectors on lane lines.
Which action is normally prohibited on an entrance or exit ramp?
5 · Vocabulary in context
🚘 Build your DMV reading vocabulary
Choose the meaning that fits the driving context. You do not need to translate the whole sentence.
Use the sentence around the word. Ask: Is this word an action? a place? a movement? a priority rule? Then choose the meaning that fits that context.
“Merge into traffic when you can do so safely.” MERGE is closest to:
“You must YIELD to traffic on the highway.” YIELD means:
“Wait for a GAP in traffic.” GAP means:
“Drive on the SHOULDER” — SHOULDER refers to:
“ACCELERATE to the speed of traffic.” ACCELERATE means:
“OPPOSING traffic” means traffic:
6 · Final practice
✅ Florida Knowledge Reading Mini-Test
Now answer directly. No hints. Read carefully enough to notice the condition and the small words.
Use the same routine without support: task → situation/condition → alert word → eliminate → choose. If one word is unfamiliar, keep reading before you decide that you do not understand the question.

Theory · after the practice
📌 Exactly how to read a DMV question
Use the same routine every time. The goal is to make the reading process predictable, even when the vocabulary changes.
Example: “What is the proper way to enter a freeway?”
1
Task:proper way = the question wants the correct procedure.
2
Topic: entering a freeway. Do not think about exits, parking, or stopping unless an option is relevant to entering.
3
Check the options: which one describes a complete, safe procedure for entering?
4
Eliminate: “stop at the end,” “enter at any speed,” and “drive on the shoulder” do not match the correct entry procedure.
5
Answer: accelerate/adjust to the speed of traffic and merge when safe.
Your 5-step routine
Step
What you look for
Ask yourself
1. TASK
WHAT / WHEN / WHO / WHY / WHICH / HOW
What information does the question want from me?
2. CONDITION
IF / WHEN / BEFORE / AFTER / WHILE / UNLESS
In what situation does this rule apply?
3. ALERT
NOT / EXCEPT / NEVER / MUST / MAY / SHOULD
Does one small word change the logic?
4. ELIMINATE
Options that answer a different question or contradict the passage
Which answers clearly do not fit?
5. CHECK
Your final answer
Does this option answer the exact question, not just contain familiar words?
If you see this, think this
“What should you do?”
Look for the correct action.
“When may you…?”
Look for the condition that gives permission.
“What is the purpose of…?”
Look for the function: what is it for?
“Which statement is correct?”
Look for the accurate rule.
“Who must you yield to?”
Look for who has priority / who goes first.
“All are correct EXCEPT…”
EXCEPT = find the one incorrect option.
Quando você não souber uma palavra: não traduza a questão inteira de imediato. Veja se essa palavra é realmente necessária para entender a situação ou o que a pergunta pede. Se ainda assim ela bloquear o sentido, aí sim anote e procure. O objetivo é evitar que uma única palavra nova faça você abandonar uma pergunta que, no restante, você consegue entender.
Final checklist: I know what the question wants → I found the situation/condition → I noticed any NOT/EXCEPT/MUST/MAY/SHOULD → I read every option → my answer responds to the exact question.
